About Us
Our Beginning
The Heritage Chinese Language School (HCLS) traces its roots back to 1974, when three Taiwanese Chinese immigrants began teaching their children Mandarin in their homes, laying the foundation for Saskatoon’s first Chinese language institution. By 1977, the growing number of students led to the use of church classrooms for weekend lessons. In 1978, the school was formally organized and became known as the Saskatoon Mandarin School.
In 1990, responding to community demand, the school expanded its curriculum to include Cantonese and adopted its current name, the Heritage Chinese Language School. For 50 years, HCLS has been dedicated to providing Chinese language education and promoting Chinese culture. Throughout its history, the school has remained steadfast in its commitment to fostering cultural appreciation while maintaining a non-religious, non-political, and non-profit approach to education.
